Review of the Baratza Maestro

The Baratza Maestro has been around for about a decade now – it’s made by one of the companies I have mad respect for, Baratza, and is a serious addition to any coffee lab.  For under a hundred and fifty dollars it packs a lot of ‘commercial feel’.

The Skinny

  • It’s a sturdy grinder that isn’t overly static, messy, or prone to producing fines that make bitter coffee.
  • It has 40 grind settings.  Yes, you read that right: 40.  This is seriously awesome.
  • The bean hopper adjusts clockwise and counterclockwise to reach the numerical adjustment you want.  No matter what you are grinding for the Baratza Maestro can suit your needs (seriously, the thing has 40 different grind settings).
  • It is specifically calibrated during production to grind perfectly.  Just like commercial grinders.
  • It grinds at 450 RPM, but even this setting is adjustable within reason.  The only reason I (personally) would care about RPM is in order to gauge whether or not the grinder is likely to overheat.  At 450 RPM it is a safe bet the Baratza Maestro isn’t going to blow up in your face.  Always a good thing.
  • It has an anti-static grounds bin.  Basically this means the grounds won’t try to stick to the sides of the bin too much after they’re all ground up.  The less static the more grounds you’ll get out of the bin and into your coffee brewing devices.  So, always, anti-static everything is a promising note.
  • It has a one year warranty.  I’ve mentioned this before, but even when I’m buying from companies I know and trust, it is always better to have a warranty.  So, I’m happy to say that Baratza has stamped a one year warranty on this guy, in case you run into any kind of trouble with it.

For the money, it’s a great grinder.  It’s a really serious piece of equipment, something that will set you apart from most home coffee gurus and aficionados.  It’s built like a commercial machine, with specific conical burr calibration, and 40 settings for grinding down to anything you need.

Amazing piece of equipment all around.  Click here to get it:
